All levels of voice are welcome in my studio! For beginners I generally begin with giving the basics of how the voice functions and focus on breathing for singing. Then we ease into vocal exercises. After the first few lessons we move on to singing a simple song. I encourage the student to bring in music they like and would like to sing. I begin teaching every student with the same vocal exercises to strengthen the voice and then we discuss different styles and how the voice can change stylistically but not technically. Read More

Increased strength and flexibility in the voice work for us in any style and ultimately give us the freedom to express ourselves with greater ease. I strive for wellness in the voice and does not push people to sing in ways that create pain or stress. For beginning students, I always start by learning the notes on the staff that corresponds with their specific instrument. Knowledge and confidence of this is crucial to the learning process. Next, I pick a method book to work through to learn the fundamentals. For trombone, I use Rubank's "Elementary Method." It is a great progressive studies that has great explanations, exercises, etudes, duets, mini-solos, scales studies, and more for young students. Read More

I feel that while it is important that students make progress, every student must move at his or her own pace. I like to set goals for students in terms of technical growth and potential repertoire, and believe in acknowledging the improvements a student makes, whether over time or in the moment. Though it is wonderful to see a student gradually understand a concept, there is nothing more exciting for a teacher than seeing a student have an "Aha!" moment. Read More

I am a composer and music educator originally from the San Francisco Bay Area. At a young age I admired classic rock and by high school found a passion for heavy metal music. My love for music lead to my decision to study music in college and make it into my career.
