I always remember the words of great violin teacher Ivan Galamian, who used to say : everything that is natural, is nice, and, everything that’s not natural is not nice. Musical material, and, learning of musical instrument, both require time, so depending on development of each student, teacher needs to understand which portion of the information to provide for each and every student and provide that information in natural and easy understanding way, to be able to help the student to learn quickly and develop a passion for music. As a teacher, my goal is to give students the technical tools and sensitivity of listening necessary to freely express themselves through the violin, no matter what level they may be. Much of my system of teaching has been passed down from my mentor Li Lin, who masterfully taught hundreds of young violinists of all ages in San Francisco before being appointed faculty at The Juilliard School. His approach (and mine) combines the systematic technical discipline of the Russian violin school with the nurturing and personalized care for each individual student of the late pedagogue Dorothy DeLay. For me, the best part of teaching is helping students grow, and helping them realize their musical abilities and self-reliance. I feel that my role as a teacher is to present new information or challenges, and aid the student in learning how to address those challenges on their own. I find that this encourages the students to want to learn more and more to expand their own musical and technical literacy, and it makes them much more prepared for individual practice, ensemble playing, and future challenges where they have to rely on themselves. In voice, I let my students' goals guide their lessons. Whether it be stage performance, studio recording or personal satisfaction, I will use a variety of techniques to help them reach their individual goals. In violin and viola, I teach the Suzuki method combined with some contemporary and fun improvisation. I teach theory, but also how to communicate with musicians in general. I am a huge fan of the electric violin/fiddle and am comfortable teaching tecniques and about the equipment needed to play. Read More

My methods used for piano students are the Randall and Nancy Faber teaching books; they are among the very best teaching materials due to their ease of comprehension, their logical sequence of concepts taught, and also their practical exercises and songs for the student. My methods used for Band instruments (trumpet, clarinet, flute, drums, and trombone), are the Standard of Excellence books, as they are also among the very best in regards to explaining musical concepts, presenting new songs, and logical progression.
