I am classically trained, so my teaching methods are in line with the classical method. For all beginner students, we work on breath control and tone to start before concentrating on song repertoire. Once the student is comfortable and producing good sound, we then start to look at material suited the student's voice. I try to keep lessons fun and engaging, whilst also making sure good technique is being harnessed. Read More

For my teaching goals I like to help my students learn the instrument from the basic fundamentals. I believe music is like building a house and it is important to start with fundamentals in order to construct a strong foundation for musical knowledge. I like to teach proper technique and playing standards so my students will learn correctly and not have to go back and relearn things and relearn their technique. Read More

It is important for both me and my student to have long-term and short-term goals. Long-term goals may have to do with technique--for voice, examples may be releasing tension or singing with proper breath support. Short term goals are more linked to repertoire and can be technical or musical. An example on the piano may be playing through a piece with a particular metronome marking. I have each of my students use a practice log so both the student and I can keep track of short-term goals. Read More

Incidentally, I started teaching when I was still learning myself; in grade-school, on the recorder. I learned early on that my ability to play by memory and through ear afforded me a stark intuitive advantage over peers my own age; naturally, they came to me during our shared lessons to inquire about my talent. While neither of my abilities was necessarily a teachable factor, they did endow me with the ability to "know" my music - through a bit of compositional translation, I was able to share tidbits of knowledge among my colleagues. I believe in acquiring a global understanding through a multiplicity of styles. Jazz and classical are my points of departure and then I incorporate different material as you develop your skills. I have several method books that I use including "Mastering Piano Technique", "Manual of Scales and Arpeggios", "The Jazz Theory Book" and "Harmony and Theory" by Keith Wyatt to name a few. For vocalists, I develop your sound to a point where we can do a full basic assessment of skills that we can build off of so we have a clear direction of where we are going. Read More

One of my main goals as a teacher is to get to know my student, how they best learn, and what it is they love about music. My own love for music and particular bands/genres is what gave me the drive to keep practicing, and I bring this same approach to each of my lessons. Nothing makes me more happy than to see one of my students getting excited about something they are playing--and because of this, I structure my lessons to maximize the aspects of music each student enjoys, while making sure to incorporate fundamental aspects of technique and music theory regardless of the particular music we are studying. I have been teaching voice lessons for more than five years. I have taught a range of students from 10 years to young adults. I believe in creating a safe space for artists to learn how to use their instrument to the best of their abilities. I believe practice, patience, and joy make for incredible artists. I believe it is my job to help a singer find their voice by eliminating any strain, stress, or tension that the singer may force upon their voice. Read More
