After we performed, we would have a talk back with the kids where they would ask different questions about acting and my experience with singing, and it filled my heart to see so many kids be entranced by theater and inspired to be in the arts themselves. I had another class i high school that focused on bringing arts to different communities around Chicago, and once every couple weeks we would go to a different middle school and play improv games, create scenes, and sing with the children of the schools so that they can learn how to embrace who they are through performance. If there is something a student is having difficulty with, I look at various ways in which we can work to improve the situation. I like to keep lessons fun and engaging but am also very passionate and serious about singing, so my style is a healthy mix between the two. For beginning students who are children, I typically start the first day with allowing them to perform what they have learned prior so that I can see where their strengths and weaknesses are. Afterwards, I will work on their strengths so that they feel confident to tackle on their weaknesses. Once the student has progressed in fundamentals, I will advance them to solo repertoires appropriate for their performances. A twelve-year-old student who wants to write songs, and sing Taylor Swift, will need a very different approach than a fifty-year-old opera singer.
