Anybody can learn a few chords but its about how you play those chords and riffs. I'm a firm believer that as guitarists we are to internalize the music. If a guitarist doesn't feel what he's doing then why would the crowd? I'm also a positive reinforcement type of person in general. Regardless of what it is, people need to be encouraged. Playing guitar, even for somebody who is completely in love with playing, can be extremely frusterating at times. Read More

The way I have always approached teaching is the same way i learned music, to try and make each concept make sense by breaking down and relating basic key points of playing and improvising to each other. For example, I like to emphasize breaking down chords and the related scales in an easy to undertand and logical way. I emphasize the importance of phrasing and shaping chords while using such shred techniques as alternate picking, legatto, sweep picking and tapping. Read More

I write all my own lesson materials focusing on what the student needs to know to play, understand, and enjoy music to achieve their goals. I have used several method books in the past but find them all limited or focused on styles or technique that is not what the student wants or needs to learn. I can teach from any established method if that is preferred, but instead enjoy challenging the student to understand what music is and how music is played on their chosen instrument, not just to read. My ultimate goal as a teacher is to create independent musicians capable of creative thinking and musicality long after they have left my studio. While reading the notes and rhythms is obviously important, understanding why those notes, rhythms or markings are in the music will help students develop and learn musicianship skills that are often overlooked. Providing students with performance opportunities and sharing my passion for music help students stay encouraged and become creative and independent thinkers not just in music, but other areas of life as well. From there we will be working on projects the student may have or the student may tackle my agenda to fine tuned playing and add a plethora of chops to their arsenal. We finish every lesson with rudiment drills, ear training and learning a new song to add to your "music library". - For advanced students we will be trading fours in every time signature, playing my most complex poly-rhythm exercises and extensive ear training until we feel almost worn out. Every person is different. Therefore, it is safe to say that everyone's learning style is different as well. As your teacher, it is my job to discover how you best learn and respond to the material I assign. I make each student an individual plan that will help them succeed. I want my students to have fun, too... after all, that's what music is all about! I like to play duets with my students and teach them basic reed- making tips, something they will need to know if they continue with oboe. Read More
