I am a patient, honest, and versatile teacher. I let the student guide the pace of lessons as I lead the direction. I like to talk about expectations to make sure that we are always on the same page. If you wish to take lessons in order to learn how to play for fun, we can do that. If you would like to learn how to play specific songs, I can set you up for that. If you aspire to be first chair in your orchestra, or win a competition in your school our around you area, I can instruct you how to do so. For solo players, I look to learn from the Suzuki Book series while inserting other concertos, pieces, and etudes that will help to develop your sound. Taking lessons with myself is equivalent to taking an airplane trip. At first, they check the wings, and weight of the plane while making sure that the gas for the plane and the food for the guests are prepared. Upon entering the run way for take off, the plane begins to pick up speed. It starts slow, but then pick up speeds up to 500 mph in order to reach your destination sooner. Lessons with me will be very similar, but not as expensive as a round trip airfare.

I start string students in the Suzuki method books. I teach in a Suzuki influenced style, but I start students reading right away. If the student is able to read words, they are ready to read notes and reading music is an essential part of a student's music education. For many younger students, I will also create etudes to accompany their Suzuki pieces. Woodwind students will start in the Rubank series and work on other technique building exercises. These methods are how I typically start my students, but more advanced and adult students will likely use different materials based on ability level and interests. All students receive a monthly practice sheet to log their practicing habits. I keep a sheet for my own records with detailed notes so I can plan the next week's lesson.

Clarinet Warm Ups: Exercises for All Levels

...can barely do seven. Your arms are incredibly sore for a few days afterwards.   3) It’s time for school band auditions. You were fourth chair in wind ensemble last year, but you’re pretty sure you can make first or second chair this year. You just got back from summer vacation during which you didn’t practice as much as you usually do during the school year. When it comes time for the audition, you squeak a couple of times and mess up some passages that you shouldn’t have; you totally bomb it.   Each one of these situations could have ... Read More

Piano Terminology: Top Terms to Know for Beginning Pianists

...the climax and resolution serves in the telling of a story. That’s what Codas are intended to sound like.   DA CAPO   In Italian, the term “Da Capo” translates to “from the head.” In sheet music, it serves as an instruction to repeat the beginning of the piece before stopping on the final chord. Composers and songwriters use terms like Da Capo to make music easier to read for musicians. Rather than writing out an entire section of music twice, terms like De Capo help provide straightforward and paper-saving instruction.   DC AL FINE   DC al Fine translates ... Read More

Jazz Scales: The Augmented Scale

...you begin to see patterns and how different scales are constructed. The whole tone scale, intervallically, is whole steps in major thirds; the diminished scale, intervallically, is whole steps in minor thirds. The augmented scale is minor thirds in major thirds. This example is a way of practicing minor thirds in major thirds.   This third example is the most popular augmented scale pattern. It makes use of the three triads a major third apart.   This fourth and final example is a pattern based on a concept called “triad pairs”. Using triad pairs is popular among jazz musicians. A ... A Case for Early Childhood Music Education

...the more musical vocabulary they will develop.   Let’s go back to the three year old whose parents wish for him to begin piano lessons ASAP. Indeed, a child at this young age will not be able to play four octave scales in sixteenth note patterns, but he could be placed with a teacher who understands his current stage of cognitive development and focuses on foundational skills in music. This can be done through a number of ways, whether game based or purely exploratory. These early experiences provide an entry point from which young musicians blossom.   If you were to take ...
