ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:

MM, Arizona State University, Music Therapy

Overview:

I am a fun loving and patient instructor who enjoys seeing my passion for music spread to different people. In 2012 I earned a Bachelors in Psychology with a minor in music from Northern Arizona University, and went on to complete a Master’s degree in Music Therapy from Arizona State University. I have experience performing in academic orchestras, choirs, and guitar ensembles, as well as with song writing and performing in local bands. Music is my passion and I am lucky to be able to make my living with it, rather through lessons, therapy, or performing.

EXPERIENCE

I began teaching lessons while workibg on my Master's degree. While tutoring a classmate on guitar, I realized that I really enjoyed teaching and decided to pursue more students. My music therapy training gives me a unique approach to education enabling me to tailor all of my students lessons to their personal goals and needs. I enjoy teaching a variety of styles, from classical to contemporary, as well as giving my students performance opportunities to really be able to challenge themselves. I believe that everyone can achieve their musical goals with the right attitude!

METHODS USED

For piano beginners I use the Faber book series. I prefer these books because it gives a mixture of theory and technique that I think is essential to learn at an early stage. For violin beginners I prefer to use the Suzuki Method books. These books are great because they get the student playing quickly, while still introducing the foundations of basic theory for reading music. Beginning guitar is a little more flexible depending on the students goals and the style they would like to learn. In the past I have used Hal Leonard's book series, the Carcassi series, or created unique lesson by finding tabulature for songs the student was interested in. Voice is also a more tailored experience based on students preferences and thanks to the ability to find sheet music for nearly everything online.

LESSON STYLE

I do my best to tailor my style to each students specific needs and goals. In general, I am a very laidback and patient teacher. My students recieve clear and achievable goals at the end of each of their lessons to work on while they are practicing during the week. This enables students to be able to really see their own progress as the practice. I also believe in music lessons being an enjoyable experience for students so I include students in making the decision for what pieces they would like to learn. I really believe it's important for the student to be included in shaping the direction of lessons so that they have lessons that engage them and are enjoyable.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
