Once I feel the student has a solid understanding of these fundamentals, I move onto introducing them to repertoire that I think would help in putting these newly learned fundamentals into use as well as allowing them to expand their knowledge on other important factors of singing such as diction, pronunciation, phrasing, keeping a legato line, and possibly language skills depending on the piece. I first started teaching as a teenager, helping out in a religious classroom on the weekends during the year, and as a summer camp counselor in the summer. I have taught many creative subjects, including music, poetry, and song writing. I have always loved teaching, learning is one of the greatest ways two minds can connect - of any age! About the time I started a family, I consolidated my teaching, opening a home studio while maintaining my position at the boarding school. Since 2006 I have taught every year in a summer arts program for gifted and talented youth, only taking off the summer of 2013 while on maternity leave.
