I have over 12 years teaching experience both piano and voice to students of all levels and ages. When I work with a student, my first goal is to establish a positive, open dialogue where students feel comfortable asking questions, trying new techniques or styles, and stepping outside of their comfort zone. I do tend to assign, as mentioned elsewhere, listening homework. I do this because I've seen it help students learn what they want to and need to learn faster as well as help students learn to like, love, or at least appreciate new things. The main point here is that every student is complex, difficult, and hard insomuch as teaching method required, but my passion is so great that I don't see issues or problems but rather new opportunities to get students excited about learning and demonstrating what they've learned. I would say words like ENERGETIC, DILIGENT, INTELLECTUAL and SUPPORTIVE are words that would describe my teaching style. Nothing is more rewarding to me than seeing one of my students develop a practice and passion for music! I encourage student's by setting realistic goals at each stage. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. For piano I prefer the Faber series. I like to include scales, sight-reading, and repertoire of the students choosing and of my suggestion. For Voice I like to cover the anatomical fundamentals (posture, breath, phonation, and depending on age), in the first lesson, and each lesson includes a warm-up as well as at least one piece of repertoire of the students choosing. For guitar I teach note reading as well as tablature, but we mostly work from tablature, unless the student is studying classical. Read More
