When I began my Master's degree in composition at the University of New Mexico, I concurrently worked as a private tutor for violin, music theory, and composition. I ultimately proceeded with my doctoral work in composition, first at UCLA, where I won two composition competitions in two consecutive years, and then completed  at Claremont Graduate University, where I was awarded a DMA degree in composition. Vocal students are encouraged to pick songs from whatever genre sparks their interest.  With violin and viola I use the suzuki method of training and follow the books and lessons, and I use other books to supplement scales/technique.  If a student already has musical literature I am very open to using that to build a specific curriculum for that student. My main priority in every lesson is to make learning an instrument fun and comfortable. I have a plan mapped out for every lesson, for every student. Depending on the student's age, level and preference of genre, I pick out books suitable for each student, and also ask the student to bring in a piece or book they would like to work on.
