I'm a musician and writer based in Uptown with 16 years of experience playing Violin and Viola. I graduated from the University of Chicago in 2018 and have studied Viola with Ronald Houston, currently teaching at Southern Methodist University, and Doyle Armbrust of the Spektral Quartet. I studied in Spain, where I won several chamber music competitions, until 2007. When I was 19 I moved to London to continue my studies at the Guildhall School of Music Drama with professors Sven Arne Tepl and Rachel Roberts where I attained a Bachelor of Music with Honours 2:1. In 2011 I was finalist in the Max and Peggy Morgan Competition. The Suzuki curriculum is also popular across many music programs in New York, so it provides beginning violinists an opportunity to play music with their peers. I have extensive experience as a private teacher (25+ years). I teach cello, violin/viola, and piano and have taught students ages 5-65. I also have prepared students for specialized middle school and high school auditions, pre-college programs, and other auditions. In addition to private teaching, currently, I teach group string classes in Harmony Program NYC. Since I play the piano I'm often the accompanist for my students' recitals. For beginner students, I like to work on positioning the instrument, proper bow hold, and simple string crossing exercises. A great beginners book is the quick steps to note reading. I believe beginner students should be practicing with this book every day. When they are ready to start learning pieces, I really like to use the Suzuki books. This works for both young beginners and adult beginners. For students who are more advanced, I am adamant about them practicing scales and etudes. Read More
