I am a focused and enthusiastic instructor who's driven to challenge students while providing a positive and enjoyable experience. I am a violist first and foremost with eleven years of training, in addition to studying piano for thirteen years and violin for five. In 2016 I started my Undergraduate degree in Music Education at Ithaca College, and will be finishing my degree at Queens College in 2021. While most beginning students respond well to the Suzuki method, I also incorporate elements of traditional (namely note-reading) and Dalcroze methods (namely movement, improv, and aural skills) in my teaching. I work in partner with students who are enrolled in public school lessons, and incorporate their school's method book (i.e. Essential Elements 2000 or similar), as well as rudimentary exercises and pieces appropriate for their level. I am a strong advocate of Kreutzer etudes, Hrimaly scales, and Suzuki pieces as learning tools. I guide my instruction based around the students' ability, needs, and goals. I believe that learning music is a constant conversation between student, teacher, and any others involved (parents, guardians, siblings, school music teacher), and like to keep communication open with weekly notes and homework assignments recorded in a music notebook. I have been teaching independently since 2004, with experience in classical, Celtic fiddle, bluegrass, rock and improvisation. In addition to private lessons, I have assisted with classes from elementary through high school level at various schools. I plan customized lessons and work with students individually to achieve goals. I like to form real relationships with my students and still stay in touch with students I have not taught for years!
