For beginning students who are children, I like to start with Hal Leanard's Rubank Elementary Method Cornet/Trumpet. If a student has a grasp of the fundamentals, I work with the basic blues and scales to build a repetoire. For Adults, I like to work with jazz standards as well as H.L. My teaching experience sates back to running trumpet sectionals (in Junior High High School) for an All Star Jazz Band in my home town. When I was 16 I started teaching younger trumpet students as well. I descovered early on that I had a passion for directing and teaching. This stayed with me, and I always have incorporated education into my directing and leadership styles as a perormer. As a Musical Director for Royal Caribbean I would regularly have to teach an hour long show to my international band in under an hour and a half.I know that learning an instrument is hard work and that motivation is key to success. Teachers may use similar tools, as means to teach a lesson, but how those tools are used will vary from mentor to mentor, and student to student. With beginning students, I tend to focus on the fundamentals for the instrument, and music. An adequate grasp of the fundamentals, along with consistent practice and rehearsal times, lead to a student expediting their abilities. For beginners, I personally recommend the Essential Elements Book. If you are barely starting on an instrument, make sure you get book 1. Aside from the fact that I was taught with that book when I was in middle school, I taught with that particular method book to my beginners in the 2021-2022 school year. For intermediate students such as older middle school students, Essential Elements Books 2 and 3 would be my personal recommendation. Read More
