I meet each and every student at their own level, wherever that may be, and help them grow. I like to talk to each student or parent about their goals in music with the understanding that many are very different. I try to make my lessons as enjoyable as possible for all of my students. I generally require a student to purchase a book depending on what they are working on. Read More

I received a BM in Composition from SUNY Fredonia where I served on the executive board for Ethos New Music Society and taught private bass lessons to non-music majors. In May 2013, I was awarded the Ethos Laureate Prize in Composition for my chamber opera Randalls Leaf and, most recently, won Peabody's Macht Orchestra Composition Competition in 2015 forPillars, erased. My other interests include cooking, camping, going for walks, comedy, science fiction, and visiting art museums. Read More

My experience in teaching starts from me being an instructor for the chamber ensemble back in college. I became an instructor when the director came to me and asked if I was interested in becoming a music instructor. I always encouraged my students to practice everyday. By practicing every day then student will notice that they are progressing. If a student isn't progressing then I'm not doing my job. I encourage my students to enter any competition or recitals. I use a number of method books depending upon the proficiency of the student. If I am staring an elementary student from scratch who is not involved in a school band program I like to use Claude Gordon's "Physical Aproach to Elementary Brass Playing." For middle school through college level players I use the same list of materials, but introduce them in stages as the student progresses though their development. Read More

For young beginners, I start off with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, as they are probably already working in this book if they are in bad at school. Outside of that, I'll typically incorporate key beginning excercises from the Arban's Book to help develop the students sound and chops. This was how my first teacher taught me, and I found his methods extremely helpful in my early years. Once they're fundamentals are developed, I will begin to work on the students first recital. I approach each lesson differently. I focus on the students' weaknesses and work with them on being more comfortable talking about and facing them. I usually play with the student to ensure that they know I am working just as much as they are. I also do not put intense pressure on students to learn at a tempo; I focus on what makes them enjoy playing and having fun. Read More
