Doctorate of Musical Arts, University of Maryland - in progress

Artist Diploma, Schwob School of Music - 2019

Master of Music, Arizona State University - 2014

Bachelor of Music, The Boston Conservatory - 2012

Overview:

I have been playing the trombone for over 15 years, and I have been teaching private lessons on all brass instruments for more than 10 years. I grew up in North Carolina, and I did my undergraduate degree at The Boston Conservatory and my masters at Arizona State University in May 2014. I just recently moved to the Mid-Atlantic area to begin doctoral studies at the University of Maryland! I have had the opportunity to perform throughout the New England Area, the Southeast, the Southwest and Italy. Performing and teaching are my two greatest passions in my life.

EXPERIENCE
I began teaching the trombone privately when I was 15 years old and have since expanded to teach all brass instruments at all age levels and interests. Many of my students have been successful at the district and state honor band levels and have gone on to attend reputable music schools across the country. I have worked with notable organizations such as The Boston Arts Academy, the Atlanta Music Project and Empower College Prep. In addition to teaching privately, I also have three years of experience teaching elementary general music, middle school band and ukulele classes! I look forward to working with you or your child - sharing and teaching music of all kinds is my greatest passion in life!
METHODS USED
For beginning students, I typically work out of basic method books used in band classes, like the Standard of Excellence series. With more experienced students, I utilize standard brass methods, such as the Arban Complete Trombone Method, the Bordogni/Rochut Melodious Etudes, and the Kopprasch 60 Selected Studies. With all of my students, I customize a daily fundamentals routine tailored to their specific needs with various exercises to help solidify each student's technical fluency. We will set goals early on in our studies and routinely check in to see the progress attained or to adjust as necessary. Some of my younger students mostly focus on music for their band classes while my more advanced students work on solos for auditions and competitions.
LESSON STYLE

In the first lesson, I assess the student's current ability and also discuss the student's personal goals and interests in music. Based on this information, I create a daily fundamentals routine for the student to use to improve the basic building blocks of playing a musical instrument. I also allow students to bring in music that interests them from solo material and pieces of music from band class. Approximately half of the weekly lesson is spent on fundamental materials that I assign weekly, and the other half is spent on the student's chosen material. I find that this approach keeps the student interested and inspired while also sending them down a path of improvement by having weekly goals and checkpoints in his or her daily fundamentals routine.
