My teaching methods are essentially designed to give the student maximum command of his/her skills on their chosen instrument. First, all students must know the music essentials and the masters, especially on their instrument. Technique must be perfected by daily practice. I seek from every individual the highest level that they can attain to. No one knows exactly what that is but what is surprising and refreshing are the boundaries once thought impossible to accomplish have been broken. Read More

My teaching experience dates back in college. I never thought that teaching would be a passion of mine until I began teaching privately 7 years ago. The first question I like to ask my students is what inspired you to play the saxophone and what are their overall goals. Where do they want to reach and strive for when playing their desired instrument? Based on the students' goals, I will gear my instruction towards my the needs and desires of the student and give them the best experience possible I began teaching students from my church who were eager to learn the saxophone. For absolute beginner students of any age, we begin outside of a book as the best way to learn is from personal experience. With wind players for example, we work on breathing, posture, and hand position as these three components help students produce a quality sound in as comfortable of a way as possible. Moving into more formal studies, I used the Standard of Excellence series for young children and the Rubank series for more intermediate students. Read More

I began teaching oboe and piano lessons when I was in college at Ball State University, about 8 years ago, and have added the other instruments over the course of the last 5 years. I struggled with intense performance anxiety, and found that singing at open mics relieved some of the stress I felt when I played the oboe. I encourage singing everything through before even touching the instrument, and ask all of my students to get comfortable with singing in lessons, because it's going to happen! Read More

It's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs. Sometime I would bring my soprano or tenor saxophone with me and create music with a student by trying to show him how music works. Read More

My teaching style matches the personality of the student. I can vary my lesson from high energy to calm and sensitive. As an previous elementary school music teacher to 3000 students, I have the ability to read a student and find the most effective way to teach immediately. When it is appropriate, I enjoy teaching in the Orff-Schulwerk approach to music education, which means making music through movement, speech, play, and creativity. Read More
