I'm a 24 year old composer, pianist, researcher, programmer and teacher from Los Angeles. I recently completed my bachelor's at New England Conservatory, where I studied piano with Bruce Brubaker and Ethan Iverson, and composition with John Mallia and Efstratios Minakakis. As a composer, my work engages acoustic and electronic sound, composition, software and electrical engineering to explore new modes of human and other-than-human interaction. My recent compositions include "Bona Dea", a vocal cyborg comprising 12 singers networked by live pulse data and haptic feedback; and "Works for Strings and Datura Innoxia in Lunar Regolith Simulant", a set of string pieces I wrote to catalyze the germination of California-native flowers growing in synthetic lunar rocks. I first began teaching guitar 8 years ago as part of a community-service component at my local high-school, Sturgis Charter Public School. This is when I first began creating specialized lesson plans for my students which evolved throughout my years as I gained experience with teaching students from various musical backgrounds and skill levels. I have a deep and passionate love for all things music, whether it's teaching, performing, writing, or listening, and I love being able to share that with my students. I did my undergrad program at UMass Lowell and have achieved my Bachelors degree in Music Studies. I currently still attend the University, where I am striving to get my Masters degree in Music Teaching. Fundamentals come from slow practice, and unfortunately, there is no true fun way of doing it. However, I pair technical work with listening assignments, so that the students actually see the point of fundamental training. Hanon is the one book that has stayed with me for two decades and I adhere to its various training regimens very closely. The book itself may be insufficient, but the auxiliary exercises I designed will improve the practice efficiency. Read More

I do tend to assign, as mentioned elsewhere, listening homework. I do this because I've seen it help students learn what they want to and need to learn faster as well as help students learn to like, love, or at least appreciate new things. The main point here is that every student is complex, difficult, and hard insomuch as teaching method required, but my passion is so great that I don't see issues or problems but rather new opportunities to get students excited about learning and demonstrating what they've learned.
