I am a pianist/musician who is passionate about teaching and sharing my love of music. I grew up in Mexico City and won a scholarship to study at the prestigious Interlochen Arts Academy. I then continued my studies at The Oberlin Conservatory and earned a Master's Degree at The Boston Conservatory. I did not specificly stick to particular music series in the market as I believe it is best to choose the music books that match with the age, personality and learning style of a student. I had started with Alfred, Faber and Hal Leobard for my young beginners. I will also introduce students with Suzuki methods if I think this is a better fit.As for later or adult beginners, I used Faber, Alfred, and John Thompson series as the starting material, and give instructions along with the students' interest. I do tend to assign, as mentioned elsewhere, listening homework. I do this because I've seen it help students learn what they want to and need to learn faster as well as help students learn to like, love, or at least appreciate new things. The main point here is that every student is complex, difficult, and hard insomuch as teaching method required, but my passion is so great that I don't see issues or problems but rather new opportunities to get students excited about learning and demonstrating what they've learned. For beginning students on piano, I typically start with Piano Adventures. For beginning students on saxophone, I typically start with fundamentals like Sound production with long tones, embouchure exercises, A Tune A Day by C. Paul Herfurth. Once the student as progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce repertoire across several genre of music as well appropriate for their first recital performance. for younger students, we usually work through a book together to understand the fundamentals of music before we start to approach more complex lessons. I tend to use Hal Leonard's Essential Elements as well as other series' depending on the student's level and musical interest. For adult lessons, I typically create a unique lesson plan that includes warmups, technique exercises, and the learning of songs or solos all dependent on that student's particular interests.
