For beginning students on saxophone, I typically start with fundamentals like Sound production with long tones, embouchure exercises, A Tune A Day by C. Paul Herfurth. Once the student as progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce repertoire across several genre of music as well appropriate for their first recital performance. Most recently I was a 2022 Laffont District winner and named the 2022 Ted Stevens Young Alaskan Artist recital winner. Once the student is at a comfortable level, I will proceed to introduce him to Body Mapping. In order to keep my students motivated, I balance tasks that each student finds easy and enjoyable with tasks that are more challenging. My students know that if they say something is too hard, I will ask them to try it again another way, using their strategies to problem solve.
