I teach classical music exclusively. My strategy for utterly inexperienced students is to remove from the equation the difficulty of reading a music score, and just allow the hands to "learn" the keyboard by having the student repeating short musical sentences (either preexisting or improvised by me on the spot). When teaching such a specialized topic as the flute, I cater to specific needs of that particular student by bringing out their strengths and providing consistent and genuine positive reinforcement. I use method books such as Trevor Wye, Rubank, and Anderson etudes, depending on the level of the student. In addition to those, I also provide some of my own materials such as scales, fingering charts, and pieces. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals , I begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults I try to find out what the student is interested in and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level.
