I began teaching in college; I would often tutor and help other students with difficult course material. I realized that I loved helping others learn and I began teaching at local music stores and schools a few years ago. I strongly feel that learning is best done in a fun, supportive environment. Every year I host recitals to give my students an opportunity to perform in additional to helping students prepare for local auditions, open mics, and other performances. Read More

Students learn best in a relaxed, nurturing environment.  I believe in order to successfully teach, I need to be encouraging, and truly care about the students.  My goal is to always have the students improve.  To do this, I think students need a well-balanced diet of tone (Moyse De la Senorite can be used), technique (scales for younger students, Maquarre Daily Excercises or Taffanel and Gaubert Daily Excercises for more advanced students), etudes (Melodious and Progressive Studies), and pieces (I consult the NYSSMA manual for appropriate pieces for the students level).  Having taken Alexander Technique, I strongly emphasize posture so that students can use their bodies in the most efficient way.  Individualized instruction allows for teachers to cater to the needs of the student, challenging the students without frustrating them.  Everyone is unique and learns at different rates, so no two lessons will ever be the same.  I teach students how to practice, so that they can progress outside of the 30 min. or hour long lesson.  As for performance standards, I have used rubrics for tone, technique, articulation, phrasing, and breathing.  Once strengths and weaknesses are assed, I create a plan to help the student improve, which is what students and teachers want to hear. I firmly believe in starting with the basics of singing for younger students, however they should have fun as well as learn. Giving them a choice in at least one song we do every so often, to me, is the way to keep them interested in the art. As the students get older, I attempt to have them sing in multiple genres and languages, as to broaden their experience and see what they like. Read More

Instruments: Piano Clarinet

My goal is to teach my students to be musicians, and for them to walk away every week with a deeper appreciation for music. I believe in nurturing all my students' creativity while challenging their skills to help them achieve their goals. I continuously acknowledge their achievements, but will remind them of what needs improvement. My students are given multiple opportunities to perform as a soloist or as part of a small ensemble in recitals throughout the year. Read More

Each student learns at their own pace. Though I do have a consistent method for teaching, I first like to see what a student's level of playing and understanding of music is before we move forward so I can see where the student needs improvement. Although we will work on fundamentals, I work with students so that my lessons can be fun, educational, inspiring, and suited for each student's needs. Read More
