I began teaching when I was a freshman in High School and I continued with a full-time load of students throughout all four years because of how much I loved it! Eventually adding some beginner adult students into my rotation of kids as well! I taught a few college level students throughout my college years whenever I could and took on summer students during my breaks! For beginning students, I will usually go with a methods book, requiring them to learn 5 finger patterns, and then eventually major and minor scales(all three forms). Once the student has progressed from the beginner methods book, I will suggest classical repertoire for each student based on their preferences and personal skill level. My approach to teaching is centered around whether the student is having fun. My goal is never to force anyone to become a professional in our lessons. If you want to get to that level I can certainly help, but I am more concerned about having fun playing trumpet and piano. We will do a lot of listening homework as well, since listening is just as important as playing.
