My first experience with teaching voice started in my college days as a children choral class instructor (6- 7 years old) at Yip's Children Choral and Performing Arts Center, a reputable music learning centre in Hong Kong. For beginning students who are children (3-7 years old), I typically start with the nice songs, which involve dance, animal sounds, musical games, simple percussion instruments, clapping, funny- playful movements. With the older children (8-14) we start learning staff, keys, music notes, basic scales, more complex songs, but still keep the playfulness. My methods of choice for instruction are many due to the amount of instruments that I teach and the many levels of mastery within each concentration. For most woodwinds I begin with the Rubank family of methods and duet books. I favor many of the Berklee press books for music theory, voice, keyboards, genre studies, guitar, bass, composition, ear training, harmony and arranging. I have over 12 years teaching experience both piano and voice to students of all levels and ages. When I work with a student, my first goal is to establish a positive, open dialogue where students feel comfortable asking questions, trying new techniques or styles, and stepping outside of their comfort zone. From there, I prioritize developing a healthy technique in both singing and playing piano, emphasize musical literacy where we regularly work on reading notes on a modern staff notation (with all the accompanying vocabulary), and explore a wide range of repertoire that speaks to the student. I have been a full time teacher for 5 years. I work with ages as young as 3 and as old as mid 60's. I enjoy the variety in ages as I believe my approach to teaching is one of building a strong musical foundation and I am skilled and flexible to teach these concepts to all ages.
