For intermediate students, I would teach a bit more in-depth theory to correspond the levels of playing, as well as memorising pieces. I usually try to set small goals for my students each week especially for kids as a new instrument can seem like a daunting task. Something I like to do is encouraging a students own creativity and get them to try writing their own pieces or songs. Something I find helps a lot especially with kids is acknowledging their accomplishments because it will encourage them to progress in learning. For beginning students who are children, I often use the Andrew Scott Method for flute. When the student is considerably advance I will use the Rubank Book for flute begginers. Once the student is at a comfortable level, I will proceed to introduce him to Body Mapping. My approach to teaching is centered around whether the student is having fun. My goal is never to force anyone to become a professional in our lessons. If you want to get to that level I can certainly help, but I am more concerned about having fun playing trumpet and piano. We will do a lot of listening homework as well, since listening is just as important as playing. I had so much fun working with the elementary school kids that I decided to build a studio up of my own and ever since i have been working with a number of students ages ranging from 4-80.
