I began teaching piano in 1995, in several private Music Schools, in Porto and Lisbon. Apart from the instrument, I also taught Music Theory, and Music Composition. I taught students aged 6 all the way up to sixty-seven (my oldest so far, but records are meant to be broken). My students have performed in recitals organized by the schools. I did my undergrad program at UMass Lowell and have achieved my Bachelors degree in Music Studies. When the student has grasped basic fundamentals, I move away from the method books and into appropriate solo repertoire. My goal is to teach my students to be musicians, and for them to walk away every week with a deeper appreciation for music. I believe in nurturing all my students' creativity while challenging their skills to help them achieve their goals. I continuously acknowledge their achievements, but will remind them of what needs improvement. For beginning students I prefer to use either Alfred's, Mel Bay, or Hal Leonard method books. I generally stay away from method books that use guitar tablature because I find that student will prefer to read the tablature instead of standard musical notation. Tablature is a good way to easily show how guitar parts are played, but is not useful when teaching standard notation, music theory, harmony, etc. In addition to using a method book, I will also teach the student popular songs, which is a great way to start teaching chords and song structure in addition to keeping the lesson fun and the student engaged.
