For students beginning on any brass instrument, the Hal Leonard's Essential Elements is the go to for most music educators. I also try to find solo repertoire for students based on their age and level of experience. Performing as a soloist is just as important as being in an ensemble. The Rochut Legato Studies for trombone and Blahzevich Clef studies are also great tools for more advanced students. As for piano students, I try to determine what that student's musical interests are and tailor instruction to their particular level. Read More

Berklee College of Music graduate, Aaron M., has been teachings students of all ages for over 18 years. "I love watching young musicians grow into seasoned players and have had tremendous success with all my students. I believe that learning songs and playing music is a critical element in the learning process of becoming a good musician. This is why I bring a powered PA speaker, mp3 player, and (sometimes) a guitar to my lessons for the student to play along with and learn familiar songs. Read More

I began teaching in college under my teacher's supervision when I was 18 years old, and in the United States I have been teaching piano as private lessons for eight years. Im happy to work with students of all abilities who are eager to learn about playing piano! Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of my key points I like to emphasize for students of all ages, as it tends to help the students progress and gain a passion for piano. From there, I may ask the student to try to repeat a segment of what they played that I found particularly interesting or illuminating. Along with demonstrating to the student certain technical and sonic patterns in their use of the instrument, this repeated process also allows me to identify a concrete path forward that is based uniquely on that student's apparent learning style, tastes, and current technical limits. Therefore, proceeding with the essentials--note names, pitch collection, techniques, and basic melodic and rhythmic concepts--can be contextualized within my knowledge of the particular student. Currently I use the Hal Leonard series which I believe is best for beginner and intermediate students. I typically give advanced students a variety of choices that best suites their playing style. It is important to keep the student focused while making lesson time enjoyable as well as educational. Read More

For my jazz students, I always start them off singing simple standard tunes that many people are familiar with. I have access to every jazz real book, and have many different lead sheets to tunes that aren't even included in them. I also have access to many different musical theatre books for all different voice types. I'm working on getting more piano books in my library, but I am a friend to many professional pianist that are able to provide a variety of texts to me which helps me more than I know. Read More

If, however, a student does not practice, I try to work with them in a positive manner to see if we can get to the root of the issue. I do not take a 'lecture style' approach as I find a lack of practice often has more to do with their fear than anything else. If I can help a student address their fears and help work them through it, more often than that this is what helps them move forward with their practice habits. Read More
