For beginning students, I will usually go with a methods book, requiring them to learn 5 finger patterns, and then eventually major and minor scales(all three forms). Once the student has progressed from the beginner methods book, I will suggest classical repertoire for each student based on their preferences and personal skill level. I suggest repertoire based on a student's previous experience, if any, or relate repertoire to their life experience, if appropriate.
