For those who want to put their nose to the grindstone and get as far as they can as quick as they can, I am all for it, but I do not force my students to be this way. Practicing hard must be a personal choice, because it is hard work. The more you practice, the better you will become, but if a student is forced to practice for long periods of time, From what I have seen they will most likely not want to continue. Read More

I always start with what the student is interested in. I find that learning music comes much more naturally when the student is inspired and entertained by what they are trying to learn. I come from a long tradition of learning music by ear. I believe this is the best way to develop true musicality. While I very much see the value in sheet music, I believe that reading music without being about to play it by ear is like being about to write and write but not speak and understand English. I am a guitarist of 11 years, mostly self-taught. I started learning with the RI Philharmonic music program, then learned on my own by playing with my church band and playing my favorite rock albums by ear. I studied Recording Arts at Full Sail University, which gave me a deeper understanding of the process behind music production, and gave me exposure to new kinds of music to expand my pallette of musical expression. If someone asked me what's my favorite type of music, I now simply show them my Spotify playlist as it's gotten to the point where I can't pinpoint a single favorite, and the amount of music I've heard is too much to describe simply.Having returned to my home state of Rhode Island, I continue to play with my church band and continue to heighten my skills as a guitarist, with the hopes of writing my own original material and continue to invest the gift of music in those around me. Along with my texts, these materials offer a gateway to learning to read and play in standard, that is, staff, notation. In addition I have numerous popular songs and rock songs which I have set to tablature and standard notation. So, I would take young students through the early stages of my method, supplemented by these other materials. For students, young and adult, who have progressed beyond the fundamentals, I would make available and seek materials to follow their desired musical style(s). Read More

I am a dedicated and enthusiastic teacher who loves sharing my passion for music with everyone I can. I graduated from Emmanuel College in Boston, MA in 2013 with a Bachelors Degree in Music Cognition, which is the study of how music affects the brain. During my time there I was able to perform with the jazz band on both guitar and piano, study music composition with the head of the Performing Arts Department, and showcase my original music and research. My teaching style depends on the student. The way I teach young children can be quite different than the way I teach adults. In general, I'm quite laid back. During the first lesson I usually assess a student's skill level and also ask about a student's music goals. Then I'll design a lesson plan with the student's goals in mind. Everyone is different and everyone learns at a different speed. Read More
