Instruments: Piano Voice
For the last 5 years, I have enjoyed growing with my voice and piano students. I delight in working with a wide range of students, from beginners to advanced and professional singers. My goal is to discover the true instrument inside of the student, and empower them to use it however they choose. Innovative teaching techniques are my go-to, including movement and acting work. However, I place a strong emphasis on musicianship for beginners to take ownership of their craft. Read More

I like my lessons to be fun! I like to start my lesson with a "music swap": we each play one minute of a song that we found that week from youtube or spotify and take 30-60 seconds to say why we found it interesting or inspiring (it can be any genre). We then aim to discuss and practice a new technical skill and use exercises to develop it, we work on a song from the method series or a song that the student wants to work on (I often transpose pop/rock songs for my students), and then rhythm training, ear training, and music theory concepts are interspersed throughout. I am a constructivist teacher. I like my students to drive their lessons. However, there is a structure to the lesson. There is always a warm-up, theory and/or sight-reading, and choice time, where the student works on something they have chosen, and then time to work on something I have chosen.\ Lessons always end on a positive note! I began teaching in high school, where I taught lessons to the younger students as well as instructed my jazz band in improvisation lessons. I enjoyed problem solving with my students and figuring out the appropriate exercise or explanation to help them get over a particular hurdle. In college I taught at a music school, where I branched out from teaching saxophone to clarinet, flute, and piano as well. I also gained a lot of experience with very young students at this school. I started teaching in high school and then decided to pursue degrees in performance and music education. At UNH I taught lessons part time for four years. I always put students needs and schedules first and met them either in my studio or at their home. I encourage all of my students to practice at home using techniques that are effective. I engage my students each lesson, ensuring they are constantly improving as well as enjoying their musical experience. It is my duty as an educator to pass my love of music onto my pupils. My students are of all ages and skill levels. I encourage them to enter competitions and recitals, train their ears, learn about music history, and have musical intentions whenever they play. I will help my students to achieve any level of playing. Read More

My students age from 3-beyond. I love to work with beginners and also enjoy to teach high school students to adults. I have a great passions on teaching and believe that I am learning from teaching as well. Each of my students are unique, as their abilities various, my teaching style various with their personality. For me teaching piano is not just to teach them how to play piano its more about how to solve problem individually, how to overcome fear, how to stay focused, patience etc. Read More

When did you decide to become a professional musician? Was it a gradual decision or was there a defining moment for you?
I think I’ve always known it would happen. I played dress up as a little girl, pretending I was notable broadway characters.
And in my mind I was performing in front of a full audience.
More practically, I think I really knew in college. I had wonderful professors and saw how much they loved to teach and many of them still performed.
Watching them be able to do both, was extremely encouraging and gave me hope in a bright future in musical artistry.
Of course, there are years of performing for free before you make it big, so I think when that first real offer happened, that was when I knew all the hard work was paying off.
Does music run in your family? Tell us a little about your musical family members.
My grandmother was a church pianist and a savant when it came to her understanding of music. While untrained, she still had an amazing ear and could analyze chords like a master.
My father was a percussionist and music minor in college and I grew up with him being my accompanist. Eventually I outgrew him and we needed to hire a professional to be able to keep up with the difficult arias I was performing.
My mother’s side of the family is much more visual when it comes to art forms. My grandfather is a world famous ceramic artist and I attribute both sides of the family being instrumental in fostering an artistic environment.
What is your favorite style/genre of music to play and why?
I absolutely love musical theater. I have since I was a little girl and I would pretend I was Maria leaving the Abby or Grizabella recalling her youth.
It’s my first love and I hold it close to my heart.
However, when you’ve put in the time, effort, and proper technique, singing opera is incredibly fun. There’s nothing like it. It feels like flying.
However there are very few genres I don’t enjoy performing. I’ve been able to be in shows where I’ve needed to sing Elton John, Lionel Ritchie, Rogers and Hammerstein, and Puccini all in one night.
If you weren't a musician what do you think you'd be doing instead?
If I wasn’t a musician, I would still be acting. I can’t see myself doing anything outside of art full time.
I have plenty of friends from school who gave up when it got hard and are now doing other things. They have very respectable jobs, but I know many of them see what I’m doing now and wish that hadn’t given up so soon.
I always knew that I’d never be satisfied in my life if I gave up on performing and teaching. I’ve had plenty of different survival jobs along the way and it’s shown me that I can excel in anything I put my mind to, so I might as well excel at what I’m passionate about.
What is your dream piece to perform and why?
I would love to perform the Bell Aria from Lakme or Zerbinetta’s aria from Ariadne auf Naxos with a full orchestra.
I performed the latter in my masters recital with a pianist and it gave me a taste for the real thing.
As far as a dream role, I would love to play Amalia in She Loves Me. I was incredibly fortunate to see Laura Benanti in the role on Broadway and I’m crossing my fingers that it comes back to broadway before I outgrow the role.
The entire piece is wonderful and I can’t wait to sing Vanilla Ice Cream in front of an audience.
