Instruments: Piano Violin

I am a classically-trained violinist and composer, with a passion for teaching music to children and adults of all ages and levels. I received my Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from Indiana University, and subsequently received a scholarship to continue my studies in Paris. Over the years, I have contributed to several non-profit and El Sistema-inspired music programs, in both North and South America. My first teaching job was in Colombia, where I taught violin and directed youth orchestras, and I have gone on to teaching a wide range of music classes in Chile, Brazil, New York City, Paris, and in Austin, Texas. It has been a humbling privilege of mine to perform around the world and I have had the opportunity to perform in David Geffen Hall in NYC, Carnegie Hall, Kimmel Center in Philadelphia as well as major venues in Kansas City, Chicago, Ireland, Italy, and Spain. I was a member of the world-renowned Westminster Choir for 2 years during my graduate program and, in 2017, we had the honor of representing the United States at the World Choral Symposium in Barcelona, Spain. Instruments: Piano Saxophone Flute Clarinet

I structure my lessons in the same way I structure my own personal practice. I usually start off with a few technical exercises, then cover some theory, and then work on repertoire. How much time goes in to each category will depend on the student. A beginner tends to need more time on technique, whereas someone who has an audition or recital coming up will spend most of their time on repertoire. Read More

Instruments: Piano Clarinet

I am a graduate of the University of South Florida with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Studies. I have had the opportunity to perform and collaborate with artists all over the United States and, more recently, in Paris, France. I am a strong advocate for the arts, and being able to express yourself fully through it. This very well includes music. I feel that the way music is taught today does not emphasize the creative aspects of music enough. Read More

I encourage students to pick the music they want to play.  For those who have no prior music knowledge at all, there are numerous beginning methods that are satisfactory.  I teach harmony and ear training at a level in agreement with ability of the fingers to execute.   It is so nice to learn to play by ear, (starting with very simple tunes) going from the brain to the keyboard without the crutch of the paper score.  Of course this is the objective of preparation (study, practice) anyway, so the emotional feeling that the composer intended can be experienced and interpreted (and communicated to the audience) in a wonderful, magical way.  Read More

Instruments: Piano Violin Cello Viola

However, I do not teach the Suzuki method. I use the book for the songs and exercises in the book. I also like all students to work from a theory book. When we learn how to speak, we also learn how to read and write in our language. I believe that the same is important for music. I use different books for adults and children. As for continuing students, I will see what they know and continue from there. Read More

Instruments: Piano Voice

When did you decide to become a professional musician? Was it a gradual decision or was there a defining moment for you?
I think I’ve always known it would happen. I played dress up as a little girl, pretending I was notable broadway characters. And in my mind I was performing in front of a full audience. More practically, I think I really knew in college. I had wonderful professors and saw how much they loved to teach and many of them still performed. Watching them be able to do both, was extremely encouraging and gave me hope in a bright future in musical artistry. Of course, there are years of performing for free before you make it big, so I think when that first real offer happened, that was when I knew all the hard work was paying off.

Does music run in your family? Tell us a little about your musical family members.
My grandmother was a church pianist and a savant when it came to her understanding of music. While untrained, she still had an amazing ear and could analyze chords like a master. My father was a percussionist and music minor in college and I grew up with him being my accompanist. Eventually I outgrew him and we needed to hire a professional to be able to keep up with the difficult arias I was performing. My mother’s side of the family is much more visual when it comes to art forms. My grandfather is a world famous ceramic artist and I attribute both sides of the family being instrumental in fostering an artistic environment.

What is your favorite style/genre of music to play and why?
I absolutely love musical theater. I have since I was a little girl and I would pretend I was Maria leaving the Abby or Grizabella recalling her youth. It’s my first love and I hold it close to my heart. However, when you’ve put in the time, effort, and proper technique, singing opera is incredibly fun. There’s nothing like it. It feels like flying. However there are very few genres I don’t enjoy performing. I’ve been able to be in shows where I’ve needed to sing Elton John, Lionel Ritchie, Rogers and Hammerstein, and Puccini all in one night.

If you weren't a musician what do you think you'd be doing instead?
If I wasn’t a musician, I would still be acting. I can’t see myself doing anything outside of art full time. I have plenty of friends from school who gave up when it got hard and are now doing other things. They have very respectable jobs, but I know many of them see what I’m doing now and wish that hadn’t given up so soon. I always knew that I’d never be satisfied in my life if I gave up on performing and teaching. I’ve had plenty of different survival jobs along the way and it’s shown me that I can excel in anything I put my mind to, so I might as well excel at what I’m passionate about.

What is your dream piece to perform and why?
I would love to perform the Bell Aria from Lakme or Zerbinetta’s aria from Ariadne auf Naxos with a full orchestra. I performed the latter in my masters recital with a pianist and it gave me a taste for the real thing. As far as a dream role, I would love to play Amalia in She Loves Me. I was incredibly fortunate to see Laura Benanti in the role on Broadway and I’m crossing my fingers that it comes back to broadway before I outgrow the role. The entire piece is wonderful and I can’t wait to sing Vanilla Ice Cream in front of an audience.
