My practice is an evidenced-based one. I chose exercises that are specifically tailored to a certain vocal idea or skill that we are working on. From there, we modify the exercise to meet the needs of the student's unique body and other student specific needs (i.e. previous habits, personality type, etc.). I love tailoring each lesson to each individual student I teach. It is important to me that my students are interested in the material that they are learning. I enjoy helping my students reach their musical goals by selecting repertoires that appeal to them while also helping to address and resolve their technical deficiencies. For my beginning piano students, I typically start with Faber's Piano Adventures. For young singers, I use the Kodaly Method as a way of developing musical skills and teaching musical concepts. For five years prior to moving to the city in 2017, I taught choir one of Iowa's largest and most diverse high schools, where I also served as the competition musical theatre coach. Additionally, I have been a voice teacher for 8 years in total, with students rising to high levels of success in state, university/college, and regional singing competitions. When time allowed, I performed in numerous regional plays and musicals, as soloist for professional choral/orchestral ensembles in the area, and often served as music director and vocal coach for university, community, and high school productions. Vocally, I believe good basic technique is the same for every genre of music. Therefore, great emphasis is placed on learning to breathe and support your sound correctly as well as maintain good posture, rid your body of unwanted tensions, etc.; musical styles beyond that basic technique change only in small stylistic ways, and I am knowledgeable in quite a variety of most musical styles.
