For beginning students who are children, I typically start with teaching basic music theory, scales, and start with John Thompson's Easiest Piano Course for the piano students. For Cello beginning students, it's very important to have a correct playing position. Therefore, we will spend some time on knowing cello, position for both hands, and then we will start with Suzuki. For beginning students, I will usually go with a methods book, requiring them to learn 5 finger patterns, and then eventually major and minor scales(all three forms). Once the student has progressed from the beginner methods book, I will suggest classical repertoire for each student based on their preferences and personal skill level. A full hour lesson usually consists of an instructional course book, a song or two that the student enjoys plus ear training, theory, harmony or else according to the students' needs, interest and the level. If a student comes to me with more experience, I will select repertoire based on their interests, technical proficiency, and past repertoire. I very often write mini-etudes and technical exercises for each one of my students based on their personal musical path. Other repertoire I have assigned varies widely and includes Bach, Beethoven, Bartok, Scriabin, Shostakovich, Faur, Ravel, Barber, Glass, Cage, Oliveros, Ligeti, Saariaho, and Ellington, along with Great American Songbook repertoire, jazz standards, text pieces, pop songs, improvisation exercises, and animal song imitation. In 2004, I graduated from Hartford University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Piano Performance. In 2006, I graduated from Manhattan School of Music with a Masters degree in Piano Performance. Performing all over the world has been one of the greater experiences of my life as a musician, and I've had the opportunity to play both at the Zinc Bar in New York, as well as touring the East Coast as several performances as the pianist in the Artie Shaw and Cab Calloway Orchestras.
