Distinguished Graduate in the field of Classical - Sonoma State University
I am a classical and jazz pianist who loves teaching people how to play piano. I graduated from Sonoma State University in 2018 with a Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance and Jazz studies. I love learning about and teaching music theory as well. In addition to learning songs, I make sure to incorporate technique along with sight reading, and music theory during the lessons. I have a passion for teaching students the rich harmonies of the jazz genre and improvisation. It is my goal to help you strive in learning this beautiful instrument in any way I can.
My experience teaching started when I was 16, a junior in high school, where I taught a few students each week. I then went off to junior college where I studied voice, piano performance, and vocal jazz. I had the amazing opportunity to perform Saint Sean's Piano Concerto No. 2 Mvmt III. in g minor with the orchestra. I then began my studies at Sonoma State University where I earned my Bachelor's degree. During that time, I opened my own studio and had up to 35 students come to me for weekly lessons. I would host annual student recitals and my students were always excited to perform in them.
For beginning students, I will usually go with a methods book, requiring them to learn 5 finger patterns, and then eventually major and minor scales(all three forms). Once the student has progressed from the beginner methods book, I will suggest classical repertoire for each student based on their preferences and personal skill level. If the lessons are in person, I will have a white board where we will learn note names, chords, and other fun theory exercises. I also have my student's do rhythm exercises to the metronome so they can have a little break from sitting and staring at a paper for a full 30 mins.
I usually start out by doing the methods book but I also stress the importance of playing with others in a group or duet setting. I love getting to play the teacher part with my students so it's more of a collaboration than a solo job. My goal is to have my students play duets with each other if that can be accommodated. Keeping it fun really helps the learning process and motivation to keep going and taking private lessons. I always encourage my students to practice everyday and stress the importance of a daily practice routine.
