For beginning students who are children, I typically start with the Suzuki Method and playing by ear. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire on sheet music appropriate for their level of performance. It is important to stress the fundamentals of technique for my beginner students before just playing music. I try to create a relaxed, fun, trustworthy and focused, environment for the student. I like to ask them what’s interesting and appealing to them, then we start the lesson. When I teach at my studio and children come directly from school I give them a snack if they haven’t had any. Children cannot concentrate if they are hungry. I then progress to learning the fundamnetal grooves of Rock,Swing, and other styles, just to introduce the student to a variety of vocabulary on the drumset.
