Music has been a paramount part of my development in growing up as a person. I grew up listening to all kinds of different genres, and eventually developed an aspiration to do music for a living. I began playing guitar so I could write my own music and be able to perform my work at venues. Around the same time I was beginning to help out kids at my church's daycare and would soon find that I also had a passion for teaching people as well. Read More

I've also found that a combination of classical and modern music can go a long way in helping students enjoy the guitar and motivate them to practice and continue to learn. If a student isn't having fun in their lessons, then I'm not doing my job! My students are encouraged to learn and perform their favorite music, as well as work on composing their own original material, so they can feel good about their accomplishments and stay motivated to learn. Every student starts or resumes classes at different levels. My job is to recognize that level and proceed accordingly. I like my students to be able to learn and progress at the rate they can or want to. Letting students let you know what they want to learn and at what pace, helps the student as well as the teacher in that progress. I like to tell my students that they will not only be a good player, but know exactly what they are doing. Read More

I use the McClosky Technique for vocal relxation when teaching voice. This is a hands on method stressing easy singing and designed not to damage voices. On guitar I stress music theory and basic technique to allow the student to develop his or her own style. At Full Sail University in Winter Park (Orlando) Florida, Repp has deigned and taught the course Musical Theory and Education Applications in the Educational Media Design and Technology Master of Science degree program, and also taught Music and Audio for Instructional Design in the Instructional Design and Technology program. My methods are based on what I have personally tried and proven to be beneficial. The three main methods I find to be extremely important are the Arban book, and the Clarke technical and characteristic studies. In addition, I've found equally important the Earl Irons long tone and flexibility exercises. I like to find out what the student is most interested in a tailor the practice regiment accordingly. Once we start to master the basics, we can move on to specific musical styles that the student wishes to pursue. Read More
