I am an encouraging, nurturing, and motivating piano teacher. While I believe scales, chords, and arpeggios are practical exercises, I don't teach these ad nausea. Unless a student is preparing for an exam (ABRSM, RSM, or GUILD) these excercises as well as Czerny, and Hanon can be an advantageous starting point to getting warmed up but definitely not a means to an end. For guitar and ukulele I prefer using the Hal Leonard method books. I often supplement these method books with outside sources and pieces as is appropriate for the student. For singing students, I have a wide variety of books and resources depending on the musical style. I come from a classical voice background, so when students are middle school age and older (sometimes earlier) we begin learning Italian Art songs in addition to musical theater pieces and English folk songs.
