I have been teaching the saxophone since 2008, to both kids and adults, beginners and advanced players. I always like to incorporate music theory and aural skills into my lessons as I believe those subjects are a must in becoming a well-rounded musician. I do not usually follow a book/method page-to-page but rather adjust the curriculum to each and every student. Each on of my students has different goals and aspiration and it would not be fair to them to force them to follow one book/curriculum. Read More

I began teaching private lessons during my summers off from college, just a few students at a time. Since beginning my teaching career, my focus has shifted slightly to group piano classes, while still teaching privately after school. I have been a student of private instruction since the age of three, and my experiences in my private lessons have shaped the way I structure my own lessons for students. I firmly believe that my students need to not only study solo repertoire, but also that they spend some time every week focusing on technical exercises to solidify their musical foundation. Read More

Teaching experience: Shirley has taught lessons for the Institute of Music Education in Scottsdale and Milano's in Mesa. She is willing to teach children at a minimum age of 5 years old, teens, and adults of all ages. In addition, to learning songs, she initiates exercises to improve her students technical skills and chord / scale knowledge which will give each student a solid foundation for growth potential. She can also help with performance suggestions, songwriting, music theory, sight-reading etc. Read More

I have worked with students aging from 6 with no training to 55 with 30 years of training. Every student is different and presents unique challenges. I find that the less a student know the easier it is to see improvement. Often with older players there are fundamental basics that are working against them that need correction. You can not unlearn something, only learn something knew. The most important thing in music education is starting them right because muscle memory is extremly hard to change. Read More

I am a Music Therapist that also has a passion for teaching the piano. Learning to play the piano as a child was so beneficial mentally and emotionally, and it created a positive outlet for me during all seasons of life. I continued my studies at Arizona State University under the instruction of world-renown pianist Walter Cosand. During my time in college, I played professionally with my brother and we recorded 2 albums together. Read More

Nothing is more rewarding than seeing my students having fun! My goal as an educator is to engage every student through fun games, activities, and chamber music no matter how much experience they have with music. Students are always encouraged to explore different styles of music. In order to track a student's performance and progress, they are required to have a journal. In their journals, they will keep track of their goals and evaluate themselves. Read More

I feel I explained a good amount of my teaching style in the last column. I really like to go with what the student will benefit from the most, not necessarily what is the cookie cutter "next step" I learned to play by trying things a couple levels above me and I loved it. I know not all students are the same, and sometimes the parents input is a big factor depending on if they are musicians themselves! Read More
