My beginning students usually start with Hal Leonards Essential Elements, Accents on Achievements, Do It Play In Band, and much more. Once my student is able to grasp basic fundamentals and a healthy proper tone and technique, I will then be able to incorporate solo repertoire for future recitals and contests. Beginning students for woodwinds (flute, clarinet, saxophone) usually start with the Essential Elements book. As they advance the next books are usually Breeze Easy book 2 followed by the Rubank Intermediate and Advanced Methods. Advanced students will break into instrument specific methods. Flute with use methods such as The Melodious Studies and Pares scales books, clarinets with use the Klose books and Saxophone students will use Ferling and Klose studies. I have been teaching music since 1984, from private piano lessons for people of all ages to coaching voice and teaching beginning violin to college classes in piano and music theory. In the past two years, I have had the opportunity to present music clinics to elementary age children at the Tempe Public Schools through Kid Zone, the City of Tempe's enrichment program as a specialty instructor.
