Every student learns a different way and I always take the first lesson to evaluate what the student is passionate about. Some students want to get straight to playing songs and some want to learn sheet music first. I am comfortable with starting anyway they need. If the student starts to get bored after a few lessons I try and bring in new toys related to the instrument such as a new kind of cymbal or a slide guitar to try and spark some inspiration again! High school students will work out of the Blue Standards of Excellence book for their freshman and sophomore year; along with a more advanced packet of warm up and scale exercises that I received from the ASU clarinet studio and my current clarinet professor Jeff Quamo. Junior year and senior year students will be expected to know at least 80% of the circle of 5ths and they'll begin to start playing etudes out of the Rose Etude book along with studying farther into the warm-up and practice packet. I've been teaching since 2005: Privately with students in their home or my studio, with brick-and-mortar studios, and with online lessons services (like Musika). It's most important that my students have fun learning their instrument, but I also emphasize daily practice and work on the fundamentals of whichever instrument he or she is learning. After all, if you don't work on the fundamentals, then you won't be able to play your instrument any better. Read More

Anybody can learn a few chords but its about how you play those chords and riffs. I'm a firm believer that as guitarists we are to internalize the music. If a guitarist doesn't feel what he's doing then why would the crowd? I'm also a positive reinforcement type of person in general. Regardless of what it is, people need to be encouraged. Playing guitar, even for somebody who is completely in love with playing, can be extremely frusterating at times. Read More

I began teaching at the age of 15 at the Willowdale Conservatory of Music where I had the opportunity to tutor underclassmen as a way of paying my tuition. I managed to put myself through college as a single parent by teaching guitar and banjo out of my home and contracting with local community centers and schools for guitar classes. I moved to Arizona in 1987 to accept a teaching fellowship at ASU West while completing my Masters degree. Read More

I like to see where each student is in terms of what there level and understanding of music is. I like to know what your goals are and adapt my style to help you achieve them. I will usually break up each lesson into 3 parts. Chord theory, scale theory, and technique. The technique section can cover several different playing techniques as well as an emphasize on the ones your most interested in. Read More
