In the Suzuki program, the parent provides the proper home environment so that the child will succeed. Traditional Methodology is most effective with children aged 8-18. Children in this age range are ready to read notation, so this skill is taught from the beginning. The pupil is taught to identify the notes on the staff and keyboard, to recognize rhythmic structures, basic theory concepts such as key signatures, scales, chords, and forms, and the meanings of musical terms and signs. For beginning young students, I typically start with Music Tree or Piano Adventure. Once the student has progressed, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire. For adult students, after seeing their level of playing, I would find the style of music that they are interested in. If students are interested in learning specific music pieces, we can focus on that until feeling comfortable and confident then move on to similar style so we can keep that interest going then move on to more advanced pieces. I started teaching when I was 18, still in high school. I have been taking lessons for 15 years at that point, and felt the need to share my experiences and knowledge with everyone around me. I found a lesson studio that had students for me to teach and since then I have been teaching private lessons, group classes, drum circles and at the professional college level for 12 years. While teaching, I try toincorporate my professional experiences and relate those to concepts that the student is working on. Read More

Basic theory is absolutely fundamental to learning to play. There are many different theory books as well as online theory lessons. However, at the very beginning of lessons, I like to use manuscript paper and ask the student to write his/her own music. Read More

I started teaching two years ago at a private lesson studio in Denver called My Music Skool. My main focus was on piano and saxophone. Now I teach privately as a freelance musician. Two points I emphasize when teaching are practicing at least once a day no matter how long you play and learning what inspires you. There will always be some sort of theory I sneak in whether it's learning scales or building technical skills that will build confidence and ability, but if these devices aren't being applied to the type of music that inspires the student, then learning music becomes discouraging instead of fun. I have taught private and group lessons for the past ten years and love working with students of all ages and abilities. I like to craft my lessons to the needs and desires of each individual student (and thier parents), resulting in a comprehensive program that not only allows the student to progress technically, but embrace and build their love of music as welll. I can teach in a variety of styles. Read More
