Instruments: Piano Drums Recorder Orchestral Percussion

My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching private lessons part time about 10 years ago, and have been consistently teaching students in my home studio for the last 5 years.  Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. I've also found that a combination of different styles of music can go a long way in helping students enjoy the drums, and motivate them to practice and continue to learn. Read More

Instruments: Piano Voice Trumpet Trombone Saxophone Clarinet Organ Euphonium French Horn Tuba Music Keyboard

I do tend to assign, as mentioned elsewhere, listening homework. I do this because I've seen it help students learn what they want to and need to learn faster as well as help students learn to like, love, or at least appreciate new things. The main point here is that every student is complex, difficult, and hard insomuch as teaching method required, but my passion is so great that I don't see issues or problems but rather new opportunities to get students excited about learning and demonstrating what they've learned. Instruments: Piano Accordion

I have been giving private piano lessons to children and adults for over 10 years. It is extremely gratifiying and rewarding to see students grasp concepts and learn to play. My lessons extend beyond just learning to play a piece of music.  I also discuss theory and harmony when appropriate as we learn new music.  I encourage improvising and email links to various performers in a variety of genres.   Read More

I started piano lessons at the age of 7 (I am now 45) and have never started being involved in music in one way or another ever since. It is both my passion and my career. My passion for music means that I am always learning more about it and working to improve. My career in music has led me on travels around the world; I have played in Rome, Switzerland, Spain, Ecuador, Argentina, and all over the USA. Read More

Instruments: Piano Voice Music Keyboard

My teaching style is nurturing and supportive. Music is an emotional art, regardless of the instrument you are performing. I like to encourage my students to think about the music they are playing and to think about the music they hear every single day out in the world. I like my students to be musically adventurous and open to new ideas and new styles. I love when my students ask questions and begin to understand the why and how of the way music, and their instrument, works. Read More

Instruments: Piano

From there, I may ask the student to try to repeat a segment of what they played that I found particularly interesting or illuminating. Along with demonstrating to the student certain technical and sonic patterns in their use of the instrument, this repeated process also allows me to identify a concrete path forward that is based uniquely on that student's apparent learning style, tastes, and current technical limits. Therefore, proceeding with the essentials--note names, pitch collection, techniques, and basic melodic and rhythmic concepts--can be contextualized within my knowledge of the particular student.
