Manhattan-based jazz trombonist Jimmy has a bachelor's degree in Jazz Studies from the University of Michigan and a Master's Degree from the Manhattan School of Music. While at the University of Michigan, Jimmy studied under Dennis Wilson as well as Geri Allen and Bob Hurst and performed at the Detroit Jazz Festival. Upon moving to New York, Jimmy became a student of SFJazz trombonist Luis Bonilla and has performed at Dizzy's Club Coca Cola, The Blue Note, Zinc Bar, Smalls, and Fat Cat as well as many other venues. I started out as a percussionist, studying throughout high school and in to college at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. During my time in Boston, I discovered a bustling bluegrass music scene and my focus switched to stringed instruments, namely the mandolin and the violin. Once the students has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what students is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lesson engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. I teach based on what is best suited for the learner. All students learn differently and at different speeds. Students will be able to choose repertoire and learn technique through the music they love. Students are encouraged to discuss the music that they are interested in, their goals, and interests. Students will be encouraged to practice and will be recognized when they have success and accomplishments. Learning about the student also helps me to understand their future goals with music.
