I am from a family of musicians and started my music lessons at a young age. I love playing the piano and have accompanied choirs, vocalists, bands, churches, etc. throughout my life. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with a method book in order to introduce finger numbers and good technique. We build more and more skills as time progresses. Depending on the student, we may depart from the method book and learn more substantial songs; I'm very good with adapting to the skill levels and strengths of each student. With older students, since they generally have a better feel for what songs/composers they like, I will give them more freedom to choose their own songs and work with them from there. Read More

I have found that the most effective way for me to teach is to activate the student's self-motivation, rather than trying to serve as external motivation. We will spend some time discussing the student's goals, whether they are concrete or abstract. I understand that many students have different styles of practicing! For some of my students, we ran lessons like they were drill sessions, and for others, the lessons were all about taking a deeper look into the piece itself and going through passages separately to personalize the performance. I do not emphasize recitals or perfection. If the student wants a professor type teaching then please pay hundreds of dollars for a teacher. I expect my students to practice and show effort in their learning. Musika has a recital at the end of the year, I do not require it. I can have a student recital at my house if necessary.
