Overview:
I have performed in music ensembles since childhood. As an elementary school student I performed in regionally recognized handbell, soprano recorder, and choir ensembles and I am a strong advocate of these types of ensembles at the elementary level. As a middle and high school student I participated in jazz, concert, symphonic, and marching band. While attending Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia I participated in Orchestra (trumpet), Glee Club, and Jazz Band (piano) and have extensive experience performing in symphonic and concert ensembles ensembles.
After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Music Composition, I have since been playing piano professionally and am also proficient on bass and trumpet and have enjoyed a moderate level of public performance on these instruments as well. I also have growing competency on drumset, guitar, and percussion.
EXPERIENCE
I served as Band Leader (lead musician) at Destiny Metropolitan Worship Church, a 6,000
member congregation, in Atlanta for 6 years. My duties during that time included leading,
teaching, and shepherding a 7 piece band through baptism, communion, regular services, funerals, weddings, early morning prayer, weekly rehearsals, special rehearsals, etc. My duties during the holiday season(s) inclusive of Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Easter also included providing musical accompaniment for plays, special selections, and more.
METHODS USED
I’ve taught private piano lessons to both children and adults since 2008, tailoring my instruction to match each student’s goals, interests, and musical background. Whether in a formal church setting or private studio environment, I’ve worked with a range of learners—from absolute beginners to music professionals preparing for performance and ministry. My approach emphasizes musical literacy, ear training, creative expression, and the joy of discovery across genres. More specifically we learn various chord voicing strategies (left hand rootless and two-handed), relative pitch skills, and music production skills as an aid to musical development.
LESSON STYLE
I believe in making teaching fun and tend to try to break larger skills into smaller bite sized pieces that build upon one another. My goal is to allow students to pursue their musical interests while also making sure a solid foundation is being established in terms of the way music actually works (music theory) and what types of motions allow for efficient and safe production of sound (technique). I encourage composition and creative play at all levels of musical development. Lastly, I provide both virtual and in-person performance opportunities through recitals, social media posts, recordings to share with family, and other methods.
