Ms. Kate started to learn piano at the age of four. Her music education started in Japan, and continued after she immigrated to the United States about 30 years ago. She started as a classical player and expanded her music to pop, jazz and blues. She had studied child development and psychology which helps her to assess student's development level and adjust her lesson plans. I usually beginwith warm-ups, scales, music theory, then continue with reviewing past homework, focusing on posture, rhythm, technique, etc. Lastly, we will sightread and preview the next pieces to be assigned for homework. Pace is set mostly by the student and how much they practice, but I will always nudge the student to improve in musicianship and posture after every lesson, with patience and perseverance. Read More

It is rewarding for me to see students develop their passion for music. And, it's important that each student progress at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. I also try to acknowledge accomplishments to fuel a students desire to progress, which gives students incentives to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs. Read More

Out of college and newly married, I began teaching both piano and flute. When babies came along, I focused on them instead. But after they were grown, I went back into music headlong! I became involved in a lot of performing as well as a lot of teaching. I would estimate that my total teaching experience, with both flute and piano, is at least twenty years. From the time I started myself in piano to the time I graduated from a conservatory of Music  -  I had worked with a total of nine piano teachers in seventeen years. Of these teachers -  one was stellar, one was horrid, and the rest fell somewhere in between.  That experience taught me what works well and what doesn't in teaching others and inspiring them to excel.  The pedagogy program at my conservatory also gave me hands-on training and kick-start ed my teaching career in San Francisco.
