I am familiar with the Bastien, Alfred's, and Faber books of piano pedagogy. I tailor the lessons to the student's interests and goals. I also incorporate principles of the Taubman Method to ensure injury-free piano playing. I assign repertoire that is appropriate for the student's ability. Incorporating lessons on technique, ear training, theory, sight-reading, and the musical affect of a piece, I see my job as presenting the piano as an instrument for creative self-expression. For Voice I cater my teaching to the student's goals and aspirations. The first 10-15 minutes of a lessons are spent doing vocal warmups and sightsinging exercises. The remaining time is spent working on repertoire that the student and myself choose together. For Piano I work out of the Faber Piano Adventure Books. For example, for the advanced high school student I often mold my teachings around college audition requirements and all-state, regional band auditions. My methods are in service of the cultivation of interest. Mainly I want the student to focus on learning how to play the music they want to play. The key to cultivating interest is to nurture the social, communicative and fun elements of playing music; associating the laughter and exhilaration with learning. I'm a self taught musician - I know that music is intuitive enough to learn without getting overly text-book about it, and I think focusing too much on the book at an early age can turn away potential musicians.
