For young piano students, I useJohn Thompson's Easiest Piano Course and A Dozen a Day. For adults, I like to useAlfred's Basic Adult Piano Course for a lesson book. I use various books for additional songs or technique depending upon a student's interests and abilities. I like to use different types of music - classical, traditional, pop, modern, etc. For strings, I like to use String Builder, Suzuki, and other method and etude books. Read More

I am classically trained, so my teaching methods are in line with the classical method. For all beginner students, we work on breath control and tone to start before concentrating on song repertoire. Once the student is comfortable and producing good sound, we then start to look at material suited the student's voice. I try to keep lessons fun and engaging, whilst also making sure good technique is being harnessed. Read More

Instruments: Drums

I have been playing drums for over 40 years, it is truly my passion. I have performed in several bands over the years with a main focus on the rock genre. I did play for two seasons with a local jazz band as well. I consider myself to be versatile as far as music styles, however, my main experience is with rock drumming. A few years ago I considered the idea of teaching what I know to others. Read More

Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals and providing appropriate music for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants, needs and technical abilities. Read More

As with most of my own studies, I try to adhere to the classical style of training. I will also adjust as to the student's individual needs. Of course with everyone, we will increase vocal range and experiment with what areas of style need more work than others, for example some may need to work harder at belting than head voice, and so on. The most important things in my opinion are warmup techniques, breath support, examining correct space, finding the lift in the soft palate, and letting go of any tension, especially in the jaw area, as it is not a part of the process! I'm an up and coming singer-actor who was classically trained at the university level. I continued my classical training under the tutelage of a graduate of Philadelphia's world renown Academy of Vocal Arts and long-time performer of the Metropolitan Opera. I decided to train in contemporary musical theater and pop technique under the teacher of several Broadway stars. I have performed in musicals, short films and Operas here in New York City. Studying jazz has also opened my eyes to the spontaneity of music, which is another important aspect of music that I try to encourage students to explore. While studying the classics is important, I think another vital element of maintaining a students' excitement in music study is for them to explore and delve into what it is that they enjoy, understanding how it's made, and figuring out why they like it, from a musical perspective.
