In 2006, I accepted a position with The Van-Dells and moved to Nashville, Tennessee. After returning in 2007, having received my Journeyman and Professional certificates in percussion, I was hired on in 2007 as a classroom drummer, teaching assistant, and LPW (Live Playing Workshop) instructor, all the while playing gigs with local bands and working doing recording sessions. Immediately after graduation, I moved to Los Angeles to enroll at the Musicians Institute (MI) Drum Performance Program, granted with two scholarships, the ‘Musicianship Scholarship’ and the ‘International Musicians Merit Scholarship’. I am very proud of the 15+ years of teaching music and the formal training I had in Music Education and at MI. I start with teaching the student a song, at his/her level, by listening to the record and by my example. After that I like to go back and give written out exercises and notes on what we did in the song. Absolutely the most important thing that happens for me in a private lesson is to see a development in a student's personal relationship with music. Through having students record personal goals at each lesson I have seen how fast students can learn to meet and in many cases exceed these goals. I know from experience how good it feels to work hard at a musical goal that I accomplish and it is not only my joy as a teacher but an important focus of mine to celebrate those successes with my students. I consider my role as an instructor as one where I give the students information that they can't (or at least it would be very difficult) to learn on their own. I focus a lot on proper technique and reading notation for the guitar. I believe that the sooner a student no longer needs me to learn new pieces and grow artistically, the better I have done my job.
