I want all my students to have a strong foundation of technique and theory, so I have all my students wok on scales and scale patterns. For a students solo repertoire, I will give all my students lots of choices. I use collections such as Forty Little Pieces for Beginner Flutists (Louis Moyse) for beginners, 24 Short Concert Pieces (Hal Leonard) for intermediate, but I also have my own supplemental repertoire list with music for all levels (especially more advanced). A warm up I use to take care of this issue is asking the student to make a fire siren noise and I go up an octave (ex. do-do, re-re,mi-mi). In an adult I will ask the student to yawn (lifting the soft palate) and sigh at the same time. This is a very simple correction to make in students of all ages. I have acquired over 15 years experience in teaching all different genres of music through piano, violin, and viola to students of all ages, as well as many years of experience in preparing students for NYSSMA in all levels. For beginning students who are children, I typically begin by introducing them to the various parts of the instrument, along with the basics of technique and position. New notes and concepts would be introduced through learning familiar songs and pieces. All parents are encouraged to attend their child's violin lessons so that they can aid practice sessions. For adults, I try to find out what the student is most interested in learning, and devise a plan with the student accordingly in order to keep the lessons engaging and fun. Read More
