For beginning students, I like to start them on the Hal Leonard Essential Elements. I believe it moves at the proper pacing for young children. For intermediate students, Accent on Achievement works well because I find the music is more challenging. Also I require older students to know scales, primarily Bb, Eb, and F major being that they are the easiest to learn. I teach using plain language that is developmentally appropriate and grounded in anatomy and the physical practice of singing. This allows me to help guide students to independence and understanding about how to best mobilize their voices without the use of mysterious imagery that, at best, only works sporadically. For my methods, I use a variety of books and create a diet of exercises and pieces that will build on fundamentals - from open strings, to scales and etudes like Schradieck, Kreutzer to pieces from the Suzuki Method as well as other options such as Nardini Concerto in b minor or Haydn Concerto in G Major. The method I use is scaffolding from the very small building blocks of technique and lead up to a mastery of each piece assigned. Read More
