Although my primary instrument is trombone, I am able to teach lessons in composition and arranging, and can work with beginning piano students. My first experience teaching came during my time on the high school drumline. My school couldn't afford to fund faculty to lead the drumline, so during my junior and senior years, I took on the role of teaching new students, some of whom had never even held a drumstick, to be performance-ready in a short amount of time. When I moved to Los Angeles for school in 2013, I began teaching drum and guitar lessons in my free time, to fellow UCLA students at first, then expanding to the greater Los Angeles community, teaching students as young as six. I believe it is important to build a strong technical foundation and knowledge of the mechanics of the voice, while also focusing on performance and real-world musicianship. With contemporary music theory (beginning to advanced) integrated into each lesson, students learn to understand and apply a musical vocabulary that is necessary to communicate in the industry. As a vocalist myself, I think too often singers have trouble communicating with their bands in a rehearsal setting or with producers and engineers in a recording setting; therefor I see the benefit in students being able to identify the grooves and "feels" of their selected pieces as well as being able to count-in a band. I started teaching clarinet privately in 2012 during my undergraduate career and have been teaching students consistently ever since. I often encourage my students to bring in music that they would like to learn because working on music that you are inspired by and excited about encourages practicing (the same goes for me too!). I encourage students to enter as many performance opportunities as they can, especially since I am an avid performer myself, and am looking to expand my studio so that I can create student recitals where my students will be able to share their music and perform for each other.
